The basic parameters of India's foreign policy were laid down duly considering the international & national conditions prevailing. Viz. cold war between communist and the western groups, the superpowers (USA & USSR) heading the two camps trying to enlist into their respective camps the non-aligned nations through military aid, economic assistance, the armament of race in nuclear weapons.

Negatively it means the rejection of political or military alliances bilateral or multilateral.
